Chapter Twelve

Hector tugged Julie down across his lap to join him on the sofa and he had to stifle a groan as her perfect ass wiggled against his shaft, which was getting harder by the second. He loved the playful smile that graced her lips and he brought one hand up to trace the petal-soft skin. How many times had he fantasized about these lips?

Too many to count, really. He drew in a deep breath, satisfying his lion as his mate’s scent told him that she was enjoying the contact as much as he was.

His Julie always smelled of coconut. Her favorite shampoo left behind the subtle scent and while she didn’t wear perfume, as it was with most shifters having too sensitive noses to put up with it, there was always the rich aroma of coffee that followed behind her. He almost had to laugh. The two scents he associated with his mate were exactly like she was.

Bold and complex, as well as hard on the outside, but soft once you got past the shell. That train of thought had him cringing a bit. After all, he was one of the reasons that her outer shell had gotten thicker over the years.

“What are you thinking?” Her smile dipped a little. “You have those frowny eye creases you always get when something stresses you out.”

Hector reached up to feel the skin at the sides of his eyes. “I don’t have frowny eye creases…”

She sighed and rolled those beautiful blue eyes at him. Hector had never seen another pair of eyes like Julie had. They were the cool blue of a stormy day except for just around the outside where there was a ring of sapphire, making them almost hypnotic when she smiled at him like she was doing now.

“So, what are you thinking about?”

Her expression grew serious when his did and he swiveled her around so that she was straddling his lap and he could look into her eyes. Both of his hands pushed the gloriously wild halo of her dark hair away from her face before he cupped her cheeks.

“I want you to know how sorry I am for being the reason we’ve missed out on so much time. I really thought I was putting your interests first by letting you have the freedom I never did when I was younger.” He sighed and leaned forward to place a soft kiss against her lips, tasting the wine that lingered. “I realize now that I shouldn’t have made any decisions about our relationship without discussing them with you.” He kissed her once again. “I want this mating between the three of us to be equal. I know how strong you are, love, but somehow, I think I ended up taking that for granted because I don’t want to ever be the reason that you have to be strong. I want to be one of the reasons why you are strong.”

He placed one more lingering kiss along her slightly flushed lips before pulling back and waiting until she opened her eyes and met his gaze.
